KEY ELECTION ISSUES
HEALTH
An Ontario Liberal government will restore trust in our healthcare system, and get every person in Ontario a family doctor within four years by:
1. Creating 2 new medical schools and expand existing medical schools, doubling the number of medical school spots and residency positions.
2. Delivering team-based care with evening and weekend support, integrated home care for seniors, and accessible mental health services for youth.
3. Adding at least 1,200 qualified and experienced internationally trained doctors over four years.
4. Eliminating fax machines, enhancing virtual care, introducing centralized referrals, and making it easier for doctors and other healthcare professionals to focus on patients not paperwork.
5. Incentivizing family doctors to serve in rural and northern communities.
HOUSING
The Ontario Liberal plan will slash taxes on new homes, improve renter rights, and save you money by:
1. Eliminating the provincial Land Transfer Tax for first-time homebuyers, seniors downsizing, and non-profit home builders—saving families and seniors $13,500 on average
2. Scrapping Development Charges on new middle-class housing, which can add up to $170,000 on homes.
3. Making renting more affordable by introducing fair, phased-in rent control, resolving Landlord-Tenant Board disputes within two months, and establishing the Rental Emergency Support for Tenants Fund to help vulnerable renters avoid eviction during financial emergencies.
TAX CUTS
An Ontario Liberal government will lower the personal income tax rate for middle class families by 22% (from 9.15% to 7.15%). This will benefit almost half of all taxpayers in Ontario. For an average household this will result in a tax savings of about $950 annually. (And $1,150 total with the HST cut)
The party will also cut the small business tax rate by half, from the current 3.2% to 1.6%, and increase the eligibility threshold from $500,000 to $600,000, allowing more businesses to qualify. Saving as much as $18,000 a year for 275,000 of Ontario’s 450,000 small businesses.
AFFORDABILITY
An Ontario Liberal government will eliminate the 8% provincial component of HST on hydro and home heating bills.
The party will also eliminate interest on OSAP loans and delay repayment until young graduates make at least $50,000 a year.
TRANSPORTATION
The Ontario Liberals have committed to:
-
Upload Ottawa’s Rail Transit System to the province, ensuring better coordination and funding for expansion and maintenance.
-
Extend Light Rail to Kanata and Barrhaven, fulfilling the long-awaited promise of comprehensive rail transit for Ottawa’s growing communities.
-
Upload Highway 174 to the province, allowing for improved maintenance and potential expansion.
-
Build a dedicated bus/HOV lane to Rockland to connect to the LRT at Trim Road, enhancing transit options for riders east of Ottawa.
